Can I Set Up a Dubai Company Remotely? What Can and Can’t Be Done Without Flying In
What parts of Dubai company setup you can do from abroad, which steps need you in the UAE, and how to plan one efficient trip for visas and banking.

Key takeaways
- — Most licence steps can be done remotely with digital signatures or couriered documents.
- — Medical tests and Emirates ID biometrics require you to be physically in the UAE.
- — Many banks want to meet you or require UAE residence first.
- — One well-planned trip is usually enough for the in-person steps.
- — A company run entirely from the UK may raise UK tax questions—take advice.
What is the short answer?
Yes—most of the company formation process can be completed without travelling. Many free zones and, increasingly, the Dubai mainland accept online applications, electronic signatures and scanned documents. What you generally cannot do remotely is obtain a residence visa and Emirates ID, because the medical fitness test and biometrics are in person. Banking is mixed: some banks require a face-to-face meeting or UAE residence, while a few digital options may be more flexible for certain profiles.
So the practical model for most founders is: form the company remotely, then make one focused trip to complete immigration and banking.
Which steps can be done from abroad?
Typically remote-friendly steps include:
- — Initial consultation, structure choice and activity selection
- — Trade name reservation
- — Submitting the licence application with scanned passport, photo and address proof
- — Signing incorporation documents electronically (authority dependent)
- — Paying government fees online
- — Receiving the trade licence and company documents digitally
- — Applying for the establishment card and the owner’s entry permit
- — Preparing and submitting much of the bank application file

Which steps need me in the UAE?
The medical fitness test and biometric capture for the Emirates ID must be done in person. If you are entering on an entry permit, you will need to arrive while it is valid and complete the change of status or entry formalities. Some authorities require a notarised signature or in-person verification for certain documents or mainland structures.
Banks vary. Many require at least one meeting at a branch, original documents and sometimes evidence of UAE residence before opening an account. Plan for this rather than assuming everything can be done online.
How do I plan one efficient trip?
Sequence matters. Ideally the licence, establishment card and entry permit are ready before you fly. On arrival, book the medical test and biometrics early in the trip, then use the remaining days for bank meetings and practical tasks like a SIM card, viewing property or school visits. Leave buffer days: appointments can move and results sometimes take longer than expected.
Bring originals of key documents—passport, certificates, and anything the bank has requested—along with printed copies.
Can I run the company remotely afterwards?
Legally, many free zone companies can be managed with the owner abroad for periods, but there are practical consequences. UAE residence visas can be affected by long absences from the country; banks may review accounts where there is little UAE activity; and qualifying free zone status for corporate tax depends on adequate substance in the UAE.
For UK residents, a company managed and controlled from the UK may be treated as UK tax resident. That is a question for your UK tax adviser, not a technicality.
Which steps can be done remotely and which need you in the UAE?
Much of the corporate side can be handled remotely with many free zones, using video KYC and electronic signatures. The immigration and, often, banking steps are where you need to be physically present.
| Step | Remote? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Consultation and roadmap | Yes | Video call during UK working hours |
| Name reservation and application | Usually | Scans and e-signatures accepted by many free zones |
| KYC / identity check | Often | Some authorities use video verification |
| Licence issuance | Usually | Documents issued electronically |
| Establishment card | Yes | Handled by us |
| Entry permit | Yes | Issued before you travel |
| Medical test and biometrics | No | You must attend in person |
| Corporate bank account | Rarely | Most banks want an in-person meeting and prefer UAE residence |
What does a remote setup look like in practice?
A founder in Leeds books a video consultation, receives a written roadmap and sends scans the same week. We submit to a remote-friendly free zone, the licence is issued electronically, and we arrange the establishment card and entry permit. The founder then flies out for a planned trip—typically about a week—for the medical test, biometrics and bank meetings, while we coordinate appointments around their diary.
Where founders do not want a residence visa at all, the company can sometimes be owned from abroad. In that case the bank account is usually the hardest part, and the founder’s home-country tax position needs careful advice.
What should I prepare before a remote setup?
Good preparation is what makes a remote process work.
- — High-quality colour scans of your passport and a compliant photo
- — Proof of home address dated within recent months
- — A short, plain-English description of your business and clients
- — Evidence of source of funds for your bank file
- — A reliable way to e-sign and join video calls
- — A window of about a week to travel for the in-person steps
Which free zones are most remote-friendly?
Several Dubai and northern-emirate free zones have invested in digital onboarding, allowing applications, identity verification and document signing online. Zones such as IFZA and Meydan are often chosen by consultants and online businesses for this reason, while others offer remote setup for some activities but prefer in-person steps for others. Remote capability changes as authorities update their portals, so we confirm the current process at the time you apply.
Remember that ‘remote setup’ describes the licence stage. Your residence visa still needs you in the UAE, and most banks still prefer to meet you.
What are the risks of owning a UAE company from abroad?
Some founders want a UAE company without relocating. It is legally possible with many free zones, but it raises practical and tax questions. Banks are markedly more cautious with non-resident owners. More importantly, where a company is effectively managed and controlled from another country, that country may treat it as tax resident there—so a UK-resident founder running a Dubai company from London could face UK corporation tax on its profits.
This is exactly why we insist on UK tax advice before a non-resident structure. We can set the company up efficiently, but we will not pretend that a UAE licence alone changes where you pay tax.
- — Banking is harder without UAE residence
- — Central management and control may point to your home country
- — Substance requirements still apply
- — Always take home-country tax advice
How do I plan the in-person trip?
Plan the trip once your entry permit is issued or you know you will change status from a visit visa. A typical visit covers the medical test, biometrics, a personal bank account, and one or more corporate bank meetings. Leave a few spare days for any retest or follow-up appointment. Bring original passports, spare photographs, originals of any attested certificates and printed copies of your bank file.
If you are bringing family later, use the same trip to view areas and schools and, if possible, sign a tenancy so the Ejari is ready for sponsorship.
Can someone sign on my behalf with a power of attorney?
For some corporate steps, a notarised and attested power of attorney can allow a representative to sign or submit documents for you. This is useful for corporate shareholders or founders who cannot travel at a particular stage. It does not replace personal attendance for your own medical test and biometrics, and banks generally still want to meet the account signatories. A power of attorney executed in the UK normally needs notarisation, apostille and UAE attestation before it can be used, so allow time for that chain. We tell you at the roadmap stage whether a power of attorney will actually save you a trip, or whether it adds cost without much benefit.
When is remote setup a bad idea?
If your activity needs inspections, a physical premises, external approvals with interviews, or a regulated licence, remote setup will be limited. Similarly, if you have never visited the UAE and plan to relocate a family, a reconnaissance trip before committing to a structure, housing or schools is often worthwhile.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get an Emirates ID without visiting?
No. Biometrics and the medical fitness test require you to be in the UAE.
Can I open a bank account remotely?
Some banks and digital providers may allow parts remotely, but many require a meeting or UAE residence. It depends on your profile.
How many days do I need in Dubai?
Often around a working week for immigration and bank meetings, with buffer for rescheduling.
Do I need to sign documents in person?
Many authorities accept electronic signatures. Some structures or documents need notarisation or in-person verification.
Can my company be run from the UK?
It may be possible operationally, but it can raise UK tax residence questions for the company. Speak to a UK adviser.
Can I get a residence visa without visiting the UAE?
No. The medical test and biometrics for the Emirates ID must be done in person in the UAE.
Can a bank account be opened remotely?
A few institutions offer remote onboarding for some clients, but most want an in-person meeting and prefer UAE-resident owners. We cannot guarantee remote approval.
Is a remotely set up company less credible?
No. The licence is identical. Credibility with banks and clients comes from your substance, documents and activity, not from where you signed.
