Documents you’ll typically need

  • Passports for every family member
  • Marriage and birth certificates (apostilled in the UK, then attested)
  • Proof of address and business background
  • Trading accounts, invoices or marketplace statements
  • Business plan describing UAE activity
  • School reports for children, for admissions

Common mistakes we help you avoid

  • Choosing a free zone for an activity that really needs a mainland licence (for example on-site contracting)
  • Leaving UK certificate attestation until after arrival
  • Assuming marketplace accounts move automatically to a UAE entity
  • Committing to a villa before your residence visa is issued
  • Missing school admission windows

Northern businesses, different needs

Enquiries from the North tend to look different from London ones. We speak to more e-commerce sellers, trades and engineering businesses, and more families moving together. That changes the structure: a contractor working on Dubai building sites for local clients will usually need a mainland licence, while an online seller may suit a free zone with a logistics partner.

Example: a Stockport electrical contractor has been offered sub-contract work on a Dubai project. A free zone licence would not normally allow him to carry out that work for mainland clients, so we map out a mainland licence, the approvals the activity needs and the employee visas for two engineers he is bringing.

E-commerce sellers

Northern e-commerce businesses often ask whether they can move their store to Dubai. The answer depends on where stock sits, which marketplaces you use and whether you sell to UAE consumers. We check activity wording against your model and explain the logistics options, but marketplace account changes follow each platform’s rules.

Moving the family

Families from the North often ask us about schools first. Admissions in Dubai can have waiting lists and assessment steps, so we build the school timeline into your roadmap alongside your visa. UK marriage and birth certificates must usually be apostilled in the UK and then attested for UAE use before family visas can be issued, so that step starts early.

UK tax & residency – speak to your UK adviser

We are not UK tax advisers and nothing on this page is tax advice. What follows is a high-level orientation so you can have a better-informed conversation with a qualified UK accountant or tax adviser before you act.

Your personal UK tax residence is decided by the Statutory Residence Test (SRT), which looks at days spent in the UK and ‘ties’ such as family, accommodation, work and previous residence. Leaving the UK does not by itself end UK residence, and the split-year rules have their own conditions. Keeping a contemporaneous record of travel days and ties from the start is sensible.

A company is generally treated as UK tax resident if it is incorporated in the UK or if its central management and control is exercised in the UK. That means a UAE company whose strategic decisions are in practice taken by a director sitting in the UK could raise questions. Where board decisions are made, and by whom, matters.

If you run a family business or partnership in the North, speak to your adviser about how moving affects the business and each family member, including anyone staying behind. The SRT applies to each person individually.

Our role: we coordinate with your UK adviser so that the UAE side—licence, residence, Emirates ID, tenancy and banking—happens in the order your adviser recommends, and we provide the UAE documents they need. We do not recommend a UK tax position.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Do you have an office in Manchester?

No. We work remotely with founders across the North by video and WhatsApp in UK hours, and support you in person in Dubai.

Can a UK tradesperson work in Dubai?

Usually through a properly licensed company—often a mainland licence for on-site work for local clients—plus the relevant approvals and visas.

Can I move my e-commerce business to Dubai?

Often, with a suitable licence and logistics arrangement. Marketplace account changes depend on each platform.

How do I attest UK birth and marriage certificates?

Typically apostille in the UK followed by UAE attestation. We confirm the current chain before you send originals.

When should we apply for schools?

As early as your plans allow. We build admissions timelines into your roadmap.

Can you help if I’m in Leeds or Newcastle?

Yes. Everything before your Dubai trip is done remotely, wherever you are in the UK.
